Companies must follow FDA labeling rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These rules come from the FD&amp;C Act and DSHEA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These rules cover what must appear on the label.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They also explain how to present the label.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The label must list the product identity (for example, \u201cdietary supplement\u201d).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It must also show the net quantity of contents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include a Supplement Facts panel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide a complete ingredient list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This includes other ingredients, like fillers or flavors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It must include allergen information when needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give directions for use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It must list the name and address of the responsible company. Labels must also be truthful and not misleading, and any permitted structure\/function claims must include the required disclaimer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the FDA does <strong>not <\/strong>generally <strong>pre-approve<\/strong> dietary supplements before companies market them. Unlike prescription drugs, manufacturers can sell most supplements without FDA review or approval before sale. The manufacturer is responsible for ensuring the supplement is safe, properly manufactured, and correctly labeled before it reaches consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA usually becomes involved after a product is on the market. Through inspections, we monitor adverse event reports and review complaints. We take enforcement action when products are unsafe, adulterated, or misbranded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Limited exceptions exist. One is the need to submit a \u201cnew dietary ingredient\u201d (NDI) notice. In many cases, you must submit it before marketing. But this is not the same as FDA approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, brands (the businesses listed on the packaging) must make sure their products comply with every law and regulation before they\u2019re sold. This includes confirming all ingredients are permitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also requires that any claims are accurate and not deceptive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The labels must meet the required standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturing must follow proper quality and safety practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA\u2019s role is primarily <strong>post-market enforcement<\/strong>. In other words, the agency usually does not \u201capprove\u201d most products before sale. It monitors the marketplace and acts after it sells products. It does this when it finds possible violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using inspections, sampling, adverse event reports, consumer complaints, and other evidence. Companies face serious risk if they launch with noncompliant labels. It must be clear, accurate, and properly formatted. If a required item is missing, wrong, or misleading, your supplement may be \u201cmisbranded\u201d under U.S. law. Include all dietary ingredients and their amounts. Add % Daily Value when it applies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Other ingredients list, showing non-dietary ingredients. Examples include capsule material, fillers, and flavors. List them in descending order by weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor. Include a valid address. Claims like this link a nutrient (calcium) to a disease or health condition (osteoporosis).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, they are only allowed when the FDA specifically authorizes or approves
